Why Resistance-tape?

Pioneers in Level Gauging

In 1965 Metritape developed a unique level gauging technology called resistance-tape. Today, more than 25,000 resistance-tape level sensors are in use throughout the world.  This reliable gauge is used by dozens of major airport fuel facilities, and is the principal tank gauge on many of the world's largest, most sophisticated ocean going vessels and drilling rigs.  Resistance-tape level gauges are used in hundreds of municipal and industrial water and wastewater treatment facilities and are increasingly the gauge of choice for monitoring industrial chemicals and petroleum tanks.

The resistance-tape sensor is essentially an "electric tape measure" which converts distance along its length into resistance, measured in ohms.

The sensor backbone is a stainless steel strip with a gold contact stripe on the face.  The steel strip is insulated on its edges and back then wound with a gold finished nichrome wire to form a helix, (figure 1).  When liquid contacts the sensor's outer envelope jacket (1), hydrostatic pressure causes the helix wire to contact the gold contact stripe (2).  The resulting resistance (3) indicates the length of active (uncontacted) helix, and the distance from sensor top to liquid surface.

The helix winding is gold finished nichrome, 4 turns/inch, 1000 ohms/meter (305 ohms/ft.) resistance gradient and provides 1/4" resolution.

Resistance-Tape Simply Works Better

Whether your application is an individual tank, a tank farm, a reservoir, or a river, our resistance-tape level gauge provides a better solution.  That's because resistance-tape is remarkably different from other level gauges; in principle, appearance and performance. Here are a few important features and benefits:
bulletNo moving parts; nothing to wear out
bulletHigh reliability, virtually maintenance free
bulletEasy to install from tank-top, no need to empty tank
bulletSensor is not adversely affected by agitation, foam, vapors, or product build up
bulletCalibration remains stable and varies only with level
bulletIntrinsically safe for use in flammable liquids
bulletTemperature detectors can be added to sensor; no need for additional tank penetration

Applications

JOWA USA, Inc. has provided solutions for a wide range of level gauging applications and can meet your most demanding requirements for:
bulletInventory Control
bulletDistributed Data Collection & Telemetry
bulletProcess Tank Monitoring
bulletHydrology & Flood Control

Water and Wastewater

The resistance-tape level sensor is ideal for ponds, streams or sumps because of its high resolution, stable output and simple pipe-mount installation. Since it has no moving parts and its output is not adversely affected by specific gravity and viscosity, resistance-tape is perfect for gauging raw sewage and sludge. Hundreds of municipalities and treatment plants use this reliable technology in diverse applications including: cooling ponds, digesters, groundwater, reservoirs, raw sewage, sludge pits, and wet wells.

Slurries & Viscous Liquids

Resistance-tape has proven durability in the gauging of slurries and dense liquids.  The sensor's smooth, non-mechanical design resists buildup, high densities and agitation. Heavy ores, syrups, viscous muds, and high viscosity oils do not hinder its operation. Applications include: coal slurries, drilling mud, iron ore slurries, lime slurries, and pulp & paper.

Petroleum

The resistance-tape sensor's outer sheath gives it a smooth, non-stick surface ideal for gauging waxy crude and heavy bunkers.  Its chemically inert surface is also ideal for gauging refined products.  Up to three temperature detectors can be built into the Level/Temp model which carries full intrinsic safety approvals.   Applications include: AVgas, bunker C, crude, diesel oil, fuel oil, gasoline, jet fuel, and naphtha.

Chemicals

Organics, inorganics, solvents, toxic substances and chemical waste tanks have all been successfully gauged with resistance-tape level sensors.  These rugged sensors provide superior accuracy, reliability and versatility Their stable output is unaffected by specific gravity and they can be installed, calibrated and tested without ever entering the tank. Applications include: acetic acid, acetone, benzene, caustics, chromate, condensate, methanol, phenol, plating solutions, sulfuric acid, toluene and xylene.

Product Selection

JOWA USA, Inc. offers two level gauging product lines: GS and LA.

The GS series represents bundled systems which include an intrinsically safe 4-20mA transmitter.  The GS series includes:
Aquatape TM for water and wastewater,
Petrotape TM for petroleum and fuel, and
Chemtape TM for chemicals and petrochemicals.

The LA series is a modular approach to system building, allowing selection of various sensors, housings and instruments tailored to meet specific requirements.  Both product lines utilize the unique resistance-tape level sensor.

Resistance-tape's linear, low impedance, stable output is ideal for circuit utilization.  It easily converts to analog dc voltage using constant current excitation.  JOWA USA offers a full line of instruments which, like our sensors, are virtually maintenance free.  Analog outputs, alarms, digital displays, and PC-based multiple tank systems are just a few of the options.

Level/Temp sensors are purely resistive and are easily made intrinsically safe in the most flammable vapors using an approved zener barrier.   JOWA USA level gauges are available in FM and CSA approved versions.
